    Date: 2012.10.18 | Category: Smiley Graphic | Response: 0

“Rubber Duckie, you’re the one! You make bathtime lots of fun. Rubber Duckie, I’m awfully fond of you!” Do any Smiley Central readers remember the great Rubber Duckie song from back in the day? As kids, we always looked forward to bath time because we got to play with all kinds of fun toys (rubber ducks included). Now days, it seems like we’re always in a rush while we’re getting ready for work and never get to take a nice, relaxing bubble bath. So we created a great new smiley to remind everyone to slow down, take it easy, and take a bubble bath every once in a while. Because no matter how old you get, bubble baths are always awesome. • Celebrate Independence Day with Fireworks History

    Date: 2012.07.04 | Category: Special Smileys | Response: 0

Happy Fourth of July to all the Smiley Central readers! We know that many of our fans will be outside today, enjoying parades, barbeques and fireworks as the evening draws to a close. But did you know that the use of fireworks dates back thousands of years? The first recorded use of fireworks can be traced backed to China during the Han dynasty, around 200 B.C. Historians believe that the first firecrackers were probably pieces of bamboo that someone tossed into a fire to  use as firewood. After the bamboo turned black, it would explode (thanks to the pockets of air and sap that are trapped in the plant’s rods as it quickly grows). This explosion would frighten any people or animals who were nearby, so the Chinese hoped that it would also scare away evil spirits. Soon, people in China were using the exploding bamboo to mark special occasions like births, weddings and coronations.

Sometime between 600 and 900 A.D., Chinese scientists discovered an early form of gunpowder. The Chinese then began stuffing bamboo shoots with the powder to create even more impressive explosions. These scary firecrackers then evolved into the first rockets that the Chinese would use against opponents. Eventually, gunpowder and fireworks made their way to Europe, where the fireworks continued to be popular to commemorate military victories, public celebrations and religious ceremonies. It wasn’t until the 1830s that Italians began incorporating metal and other additives into fireworks to create the colorful, multihued sparks and sunbursts we see today.

  • Ooey Gooey S’mores are a Summer Staple

    Date: 2012.06.20 | Category: Uncategorized | Response: 0

Last weekend, a motley crew of Smiley Central employees gathered together at our offices far too early on a Saturday morning, groggy and growling for coffee. After loading up several vans with supplies (hey, we like to be prepared) we set off for a weekend adventure of hiking, tubing and camping as an office-bonding exercise. And bond we did — when you’re in a fan with your coworkers for six hours on your way to the mountains, things can get a little crazy. Luckily, we all made it through the weekend without being mauled by a bear or popping a tube on the river’s rapids. We did come back with mosquito bites, sunburns and some really great stories.

What is everyone’s favorite thing about camping? S’mores. Some of the Smiley Central staffers ate only s’mores on our weekend in the woods and that is fine. Whether you like your ‘mallows burnt to a crisp or lightly toasted, you really can’t beat the ooey-gooey goodness of melted chocolate, warm marshmallows and crunchy graham crackers roasted over a roaring outdoor fire. To commemorate our weekend in the woods, we created this brand new smiley graphic of a cool dude roasting marshmallows. Download it today and share it with your friends! Who knows? It may inspire you all to pack into a van and head to the mountains like we did.

  • Show Dad You Care With a Father’s Day Smiley

    Date: 2012.06.13 | Category: Special Smileys | Response: 0

Hey everyone, this is your reminder to take some time this weekend to tell your dear old dad “Happy Father’s Day.” While Memorial Day seems to be the official start of summer, it always seems to us like Father’s Day is the real start to summer — probably because it is usually accompanied by grilling out and playing baseball, two of a dads’ favorite things to do. We can all thank our pops for a lot of things. We asked around the Smiley Central office what people could attribute to their dads. Some people mentioned religion, a sense of family pride, a hard work ethic, how to cook, how to fix things, how to play baseball or tennis or football or swim, how to ride a bike, how to fix a flat tire… the list goes on and on.

Still looking for a great Father’s Day gift? How about a tie? A new pair of socks? Just kidding, we give you permission to give him something he really wants — a smiley from Smiley Central. Download the smiley below for free and send it over to dad. It’s guaranteed to make you his favorite son or daughter.

  • Use Yoga (and Smileys) to Reduce Stress

    Date: 2012.05.10 | Category: Special Smileys | Response: 0

Ommmmmm. It’s Thursday and at the Smiley Central office we’re a little stressed out — the weekend is just out of reach and we’ve been working super hard to bring you even more smileys than ever before. We know our hard work will pay off when we hear from our adoring fans (you) how much they like our new smileys, like the Potty Pack now available for download on Smiley Mobile. Until then though, we need to take a few minutes and relax.

Yoga has been around for centuries, but has re-surged as a fad in recent years. Here in New York, you can’t walk through most neighborhoods without seeing several people in workout gear carrying a yoga mat to their local studio. And we don’t know exactly how the Downward Dog and Child’s Pose make us feel so much better, but they really do! In addition to reducing stress, yoga has been promoted as a way to lower blood pressure, encourage better sleep, reduce anxiety and muscle tension and slow the aging process. Right on!

What do you do to de-stress during a hard work week? In addition to yoga, we recommend checking out our smileys at Smiley Central. They’re always good for a laugh! Even better, share some smileys with a friend who’s having a bad day.

  • Celebrate St. Patty’s Day With a Smiley Pack

    Date: 2012.03.15 | Category: iPhone App | Response: 0

This weekend we’ll all be seeing green. That’s right, it’s St. Patrick’s Day. Unfortunately, the holiday falls on a weekend so the Smiley Central office can’t celebrate like we usually do. However, we’re sure that the day will be spent wearing green, eating corned beef and cabbage and celebrating just as we would right here at work. St. Patrick’s Day has been celebrated here in the good old US of A since 1737. The first American celebration for the patron saint of Ireland was held in Boston, Massachusetts. In 1766, New York City held the first official St. Patrick’s Day parade. And since everyone likes to pretend they’re Irish on the special holiday, over 100 U.S. cities now boast St. Patty’s Day parades.

To get your crew of hooligans ready for the holiday, Smiley Central has a special surprise, just for you! Share your excitement for St. Patty’s Day with the Smiley Central St. Patrick’s Day iPhone Smileys. No need to paint yourself green, just download the smiley pack and start sharing with your friends from wherever you may be. It’s the perfect way to be festive and fun from your phone. Download the St. Patrick’s Day Smileys and start sending them to all your friends!

  • Who Stole the Cookies from the Cookie Jar? Introducing Social Crumbs!

    Date: 2012.03.07 | Category: Facebook | Response: 0

Have you every been craving something in your cabinet? A bag of chips or something sweet? But when you go to get that snack, someone has taken the last of it and you’re left with nothing? We hate when that happens. For example, the other day someone brought in the most delicious chocolate chip cookies to the Smiley Central office. During the day, different people would sneak into the kitchen to grab one of the amazing cookies. All of a sudden, there were no more to go around — they had all been gobbled up! Would it be inappropriate to eat all the crumbs?

Speaking of crumbs, Smiley Central has a great new Facebook page to share with all of our fans. It’s called Social Crumbs. What’s that, you ask? • Channel Your Inner Gangster with Baddies Smiley Pack

    Date: 2012.03.01 | Category: iPhone App | Response: 0

An ongoing conversation here at Smiley Central has us thinking about nostalgia. These days, instances of nostalgia are seen everywhere, but nowhere more so than the entertainment industries. Just take a look at this year’s Academy Awards, which aired last Sunday. Nominated movies included Midnight in Paris, which focused on one writer’s desire to live in Paris in the ’20s, and The Artist, which was a throwback to silent films. Some of our favorite television shows these days don’t even take place in the present. Downton Abbey and Mad Men both have a huge fan base. What is it about nostalgia that makes us think everything is cooler in retrospect?

Take The Godfather movies for example. Those dudes in their suits, ties and guns seem so cool, when they were really wreaking some serious havoc on their families and communities. But they just look so awesome when they do it. Now we’re not telling you to go wild, but maybe you could channel a little more of the swagger seen in The Godfather, Mad Men and Downton Abbey to feel more connected with the past. And donning a slick suit or fancy hat never hurt anyone either.
